Chrissy Lush’s work centers on moments when composure begins to give way. Set within domestic and suburban environments, from private bedrooms to the heavy stillness of gravesites, her staged photographs attend to small ruptures in behavior, posture, and gesture. These are moments of slippage, when a controlled exterior falters and something unguarded briefly surfaces.
Lush’s figures often occupy a precarious edge of control and appear to respond to pressures that remain just outside the frame. By leaving these gestures unresolved and suspended between quiet rebellion and despair, her work explores the tension between what is presented and what is withheld, and the subtle ways emotional vulnerability registers within space.
Biography
Chrissy Lush (b. New York) is a visual artist based in Nashville. She holds an MFA from Parsons School of Design and a BFA from SUNY Purchase. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at Future Fair in New York, and has been recognized by institutions such as the Royal Photographic Society and Aesthetica.
Her self-published monograph, Hold Me Tight (2022), was described by critic Barry Schwabsky as a poignant exploration of the "factitiousness of recollection," highlighting the nuanced dialogue between her younger and present selves. Lush is a Critical Mass finalist, a recipient of the Passepartout Photo Prize Exhibition Award, and her work is held in private collections throughout the United States.
